SAN FRANCISCO-“The IPO's of 1993 laid the foundation for the REIT industry today.” So said 2013 NAREIT chair W. Edward Walter, president and CEO of Host Hotels & Resorts Inc., at REITWorld 2013.

We joined Walter at a lunch awards presentation Wednesday along with nearly 1,200 other attendees here in San Francisco at NAREIT's annual conference, where he welcomed the new 2014 NAREIT chair, Ronald Havner Jr.

Havner Jr., chairman and president & CEO of Public Storage, said that the principal focus for him in 2014 is to continue to gauge the investment community and broaden its base. In addition, he plans to further NAREIT research and will continue to explain to representatives on Capital Hill about the importance of REITs to the economy and to the citizens that invest in them.

“Our industry has a great track record,” Havner Jr. said. “I am looking forward to building on the strong foundation established by Ed Walter and all of the prior NAREIT chairs who have served the REIT industry so well.”

Havner Jr. presented the NAREIT Lawrence Miller industry achievement award to T. Ritson Ferguson, CEO of CBRE Clarion Securities, and the Edward H. Linde industry leadership award to Bryce Blair, president of Harborview Assoc. LLC.

Blair said it was an honor to receive the award and said that like many of those early leaders of the industry, 2013 NAREIT chair, Walter, was “gracious with his time.” He explained that the quality of leadership is what really helped the growth of the REIT industry. “The CEOs gave their time …They were selfless in how they allocated their time particularly in those early years.” He added that “The success of their individual company was based also on the success of the industry, and they understood that.”

Ferguson added that “The last 20-plus years have been an incredible journey and I am looking forward to the next 20.”

In addition to the 2013 award recipients, 2012 Lawrence Miller industry achievement award winner Robert Steers, said a few words. “US REITs represent the leading real estate companies in the world,” he said. “That doesn't happen by accident.”

Steers pointed out that the early believers in the industry stuck with it through thick and thin. Steers also served at a panelist of one of the REITWorld sessions. To read more of his thoughts and coverage of that panel, click here.
