ATLANTIC CITY-Achieving a milestone in the push to make this gambling hub more of a tourist destination, Atlantic City will begin getting daily nonstop United Airlines service to Chicago and Houston as of April 1.
United said it will schedule flights from Atlantic City International Airport directly to those hubs, allowing passengers from the resort city to connect to points throughout the Midwest, the western U.S. and abroad. United is the biggest air passenger carrier in New Jersey.
"It speaks volumes that a company like United Airlines recognizes the full and future potential of Atlantic City International Airport," Gov. Christopher Christie said in prepared remarks. "The decision to bring air service to the seaside resort opens Atlantic City and ACY to the world while expanding travel service opportunities for the people of the South Jersey region."
The Atlantic City airport is now being operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Under the aegis of the South Jersey Transportation Authority with Spirit Airlines as its sole provider, the scheduled number of flights had declined by 25% in the first half of the year.
United Service will fly daily nonstop to Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The airline announced these scheduled flights:
· From Chicago, United will fly to Atlantic City, departing at 8:10 a.m. daily, arriving at 11:17 a.m., with a return flight departing Atlantic City at 11:52 a.m. and arriving in Chicago at 1:10 p.m.
· From Houston, United's flight to Atlantic City will depart at 7 p.m. daily, arriving at 11:20 p.m. The return flight will depart Atlantic City at 6 a.m. and arrive in Houston at 8:49 a.m.
