PETALUMA-SMART's board of directors has awarded a contract of nearly $70 million to Oakland-based Shimmick Construction for construction of a stretch of rail between the Marin Civic Center and downtown San Rafael. It is the largest contract since construction on the rail system began in 2012.

Shimmick will also build the rail system's maintenance facility in northern Santa Rosa, and a new movable rail crossing over the Petaluma River, according to a report this week in the North Bay Business Journal.

SMART is ultimately expected to run from Cloverdale in northern Sonoma County to Larkspur in Marin County, but the recession has caused the agency to scale down plans, at least temporarily.
