CHICAGO-The Chicago Plan Commission unanimously voted on Thursday to amend the city code to bar the 18-story Hyatt House hotel project in River North.

The panel, at the behest of Alderman Brendan Reilly, amended the city code to bar the 18-story hotel from permitted uses on the site, according to Crain's Chicago Business. The amendment must be approved by the full City Council.

The joint venture of Waterton Associates LLC and RSL Building Corp. are planning to build the hotel at 403 N. Wabash Ave., which is close by to the Trump International Hotel & Tower.

Although a 1974 ordinance permits a hotel, Alderman Reilly said the ordinance focused on building residential units on the property and that the area is rife with hotels already. “There are literally thousands of hotel keys within feet of the proposed site,” Reilly said. He later added that allowing the hotel to be built at the site would be “irresponsible.” See story in Crain's Chicago Business.
