IRVINGTON, NJ-A developer has stepped up to build a 700-unit rental complex at the site of the former Irving General Hospital.
Developers paid $1 million to acquire the six-acre site on Chancellor Avenue from the Township, according to the Star-Ledger. The hospital closed in 2006.
The Hilltop Residential Development will be built in phases over the next 15 years, and it is to include 15,000 square feet of commercial space, according to Matthew Gross, of New York-based Urban Builders Collaborative.
Urban Builders Collaborative, the development arm of Lettire Construction, and Kapwood, a development firm in Irvington, will partner on the $160 million project.
The first phase will include 125 residential units, according to Patrick Terborg of Kapwood.
Adenah Bayoh or Kapwood says the units will be mixed-income rentals. Commercial tenants have not been finalized.
“We really want to change Irvington,” Bayoh said. She said buildings will range from six to 18 stories.
The first phase of the project - a six-to-eight story building - will cost about $20 million.
