LOS ANGELES-James Frank, owner of North Hollywood's the Beverly Garland Hotel has launched a $20-million renovation project. Scheduled for completion in summer 2014, the renovation will reposition the iconic hotel as the North Hollywood submarket's first boutique hotel, the Garland Hotel.

“We are beyond thrilled for the next chapter of this revered Los Angeles hotel,” says the hotel's general manager Scott Mills, who is leading the renovation project. “The history of the property, combined with the plans we have in store, will bring the hotel to the next level. We're excited to debut the Garland next summer.”

Interior design firm Forchielli Glynn will redesign the hotel's 242 guestrooms and 14 suites and common areas into "sophisticated, retro-style" spaces featuring bold colors and eclectic decor that exude the California-style. The firm is known for its redesigns of other Southern California hotel icons, like the Peninsula Beverly Hills and the Riviera Hotel in Palm Springs. Additionally, executive chef Warren Schwartz, formerly of Westside Tavern, will open his new yet-to-be-named restaurant at the renovated hotel next year. During construction, Schwartz will open Warren's Blackboard, an experimental eatery that will help him craft the concept for the new restaurant.

The Beverly Garland opened in 1970 in honor of actress Beverly Garland. The actresses husband Filmore Crank and Tropicana Hotel owner John Kell Houssels, Jr. originally owned the hotel, until 1999 when James Crank, the family's next generation, took over. He says, “It's been a dream of mine to turn this beautiful property into a unique boutique hotel. Our focus on service and the guest experience coupled with our determination to create an alternative hotel offering in Los Angeles will surely surpass expectations.”

Activity in the hospitality sector appears to be picking up throughout Los Angeles. GlobeSt.com recently reported that foreign investors purchased the Marriott South Bay for $76 million, including credit for the hotel's replacement reserve.
