BRICK, NJ-A ten-acre site here adjacent to Forge Pond, empty for five years, had a planned future in 2013, but as 2014 dawns, the plan appears to have evaporated.

The former home of a Foodtown, the parcel on Route 70, is one of the largest parcels left to develop in the township, reports the Asbury Park Press. Last January, the named developer, M&M Realty Partners, said it had decided to build a condominium/retail complex on the site.

Previously, M&M had planned a hotel and convention center.

This January, a new mayor - John Ducey - takes office and he said he will not support the change in plan. The Township Council must approve the change to its redevelopment agreement for M&M to move forward.

“The only thing we have heard from the redeveloper in the last year is the change to condos - which is out of the question,” said Ducey, currently a Democratic councilman.

Almost five years ago, M&M was awarded development rights by a Republican-led council and purchased the property from the township. At the time, M&M said it would build a 120-room hotel, a grocery store, retail space, restaurants and a banquet hall.

It amended its plans this year after studying the market and concluding it would not support a hotel conference center, M&M has stated.

A local citizens group recently proposed a smaller hotel/conference center, with a public aquatic center and boat ramp to the adjacent Forge Pond.
