NEW YORK CITY-Nordstrom has announced plans to open a Nordstrom Rack at the Shops at SkyView Center in Queens. The approximately 39,000-square-foot, two-level store is scheduled to open in fall 2014. The developer for the project is Onex Real Estate Partners.
Nordstrom Rack is the off-price retail division of Nordstrom, Inc. It carries merchandise from Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com and items from many of the brands sold at Nordstrom.
Nordstrom Rack also is set to open its first Brooklyn location on Fulton Street in spring 2014 followed by a second location at the Gateway Center in Brooklyn in the fall. When it opens, the Shops at SkyView Center Nordstrom Rack will be the company's first Queens location.
“We are excited about the opportunity to be a part of a dynamic retail center within a vibrant neighborhood in the heart of Queens and right off the Long Island Rail Road,” says Geevy Thomas, president of Nordstrom Rack. “We look forward to opening next fall and bringing our customers the very best of our brands at great prices.”
“Queen of retail” Faith Hope Consolo, chairman of Douglas Elliman's retail group, tells GlobeSt.com, “Rack is certainly making its commitment to all of New York City—it's opening in Brooklyn this year as well—so this is part of an overall expansion strategy around the city, that has several layers.
“It's going into areas that are attracting young professionals,” she continues, “which Rack is targeting to build affection for Nordstrom and to appeal to value-oriented shoppers. Plus, it's a great way for the brand to build its name around the city and learn the logistics of NYC operations for when the full-price store opens in 2018. It's genius really. I would expect every borough to get one at some point.”
Nordstrom Rack, Queens will join an approximately 700,000-square-foot shopping center which is home to a mix of retailers, including Target, Old Navy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Marshall's, Restoration Hardware and the specialty Asian supermarket Sky Foods among others.
“Nordstrom Rack moving to SkyView Center is a transformative step, further establishing Queens as a major retail destination attracting shoppers throughout the Greater New York City area,” says Michael Dana, president of Onex Real Estate Partners and owner and developer of the Shops at SkyView Center.
