INDIANAPOLIS—The Real Estate and Investment Securities Association recently held its first board meeting of the year, and the organization's Board of Directors elected Thomas G. Voekler to serve as the trade group's 2014 president-elect. Mark Kosanke of Concorde Financial Group currently serves as the group's 2014 president. The other REISA officers elected at the meeting were: Peter Blum of Ladenburg Thalmann & Co. as vice president; Derek Peterson of Walton International Group as secretary; and Deborah Froling of Arent Fox LLP as treasurer. Michael Weil of American Realty Capital was the organization's 2013 president and will remain on the board.

Voekler will serve as president-elect until December 2014 and then begin a one-year term as president in January 2015. He helped found the Richmond-based law firm Kaplan Voekler Cunningham & Frank, PLC, and now serves as managing partner of its business operations. Voekler focuses primarily on corporate finance, public and private securities offerings, including private equity, hedge funds and corporate governance issues. He also specializes in REITs, 1031 syndications and other public and private offerings of real estate investments. He graduated from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary.

Blum has been the co-chief executive officer and co-president of Ladenburg Thalmann since December 2011. Previously he served as its head of capital markets and investment banking. Derek Peterson serves as the senior vice president of business development for Walton and sits on the board of directors for Walton Securities, Inc. Prior to joining Walton, Peterson was the chief marketing officer for a leading REIT sponsor.

Deborah Froling belongs to Arent Fox's corporate/securities and real estate groups in its Washington, DC, office. She has extensive experience in public and private offerings of debt, equity and convertible securities as both an issuer's and underwriter's counsel, primarily for real estate companies, including REITs, tenant-in-common syndications, as well as equipment financing and oil and gas companies.

Michael Weil has been the president of American Realty Capital since February 2012. Previously, Weil was senior vice president of sales and leasing for American Financial Realty Trust, where he was responsible for the disposition and leasing of a 37.3-million-square-foot portfolio.

REISA serves alternative investment and securities industry professionals who offer, manage and distribute private and public direct investments. It was founded in 2003 and has more than 1,700 members.
