LOS ANGELES-Tishman Construction has been selected to provide program management and construction management services for phase one of the China-based Greenland Group's Metropolis development. The $1 billion project will feature mixed-use residential, hotel and retail space on a 6.33-acre site in Downtown Los Angeles.
The first phase of Metropolis will include a 19-story luxury hotel with 350 rooms and a 38-story residential tower that will house approximately 300 units. Designed by Gensler, the planned two-phase development will ultimately consist of one high-rise hotel and three residential buildings, all featuring retail on the ground floor.
“We are excited to build on AECOM's current work with Greenland Group in Asia and deliver its first development in the United States," said Michael Burke, president of Tishman's parent company, AECOM. “Our team is proud to be part of this innovative project in Downtown Los Angeles, and we look forward to future opportunities to partner with Greenland around the world.”
The Metropolis site comprises a full city block, strategically bordering the Harbor Freeway and situated between the Financial District to the north and the L.A. Live Hotel and Entertainment complex, including the Staples Center and the Los Angeles Convention Center, to the south.

“AECOM has become a trusted partner in successfully realizing the vision of our projects, and we are pleased to continue that relationship on Metropolis,” added Ifei Chang, president and CEO of Greenland U.S. “As we progress on our first U.S. development, we thank the AECOM/Tishman team for its efforts helping us break new ground.”
Following phase one's groundbreaking in February 2014, the hotel anticipates completion in early 2016, and the first residential tower is expected to open in summer 2016.
