Last week's construction of the Fulton River District bridge was canceled due to inclement weather, but Fifield officials say the project will go ahead on February 13 at 9:00 AM.

CHICAGO—The transformation of the Fulton River District from an area of railways and warehouses into a true residential neighborhood will require the installation of more pedestrian-friendly infrastructure over the next few years. The Fifield Cos. will take a big step forward in that transformation on Wednesday when it begins construction of a 105-foot span over Union Ave., connecting K2 Apartments, a 496-unit luxury tower at 365 N. Halsted St., to the Jewel - Osco on Des Plaines St. The bridge will create a private access for residents from the building's pool deck to the grocery store. Fifield developed K2 in a joint venture with Wood Partners.

“It took more than two years to bring this to fruition, but we persevered because this is an incredible benefit for our residents,” says Randy Fifield, principal and vice chair of Fifield. “Residents of K2 have come to expect the best amenities and this new bridge adds yet another convenience to K2's luxury lifestyle."

K2 opened last March, and as reported in GlobeSt.com, the Chicago-based Fifield signed 125 leases in the first 75 days, leasing 25% of the building. The company has now leased 70% of the units.

Residents will have access to the open-air bridge at both ends with electric keys. Once the company puts the bridge up this week, it will take another six-to-eight weeks to install side panels and floor treads before residents can use it in March.

“It's been extremely cold in Chicago this winter and the bridge will shorten our residents' walk to their neighborhood grocery store substantially on those frigid days,” says Steve Fifield, chairman and CEO. “Right now our residents have to exit the K2 lower lobby at Kinzie Street, walk up Kinzie to Des Plaines Street, turn right and walk up Des Plaines to the Jewel Osco entrance and back. That round trip from the main lobby to Jewel and back is about 500 steps each way versus 200 steps from the K2 deck across the new bridge to the Jewel Osco entrance. When you're carrying groceries, this makes the trip much shorter."
