CHICAGO—Mortenson Construction has decided to expand its real estate operations in the Chicago metropolitan area by establishing a formal development office and appointing local veteran J. Randall Tieman as its director. Tieman will work with Greg Werner, vice-president and head of Mortenson's Chicago office, and lead development projects from project feasibility analysis, site selection and acquisition, planning and financing through completion.

Until joining Mortenson, Tieman, 58, was a managing director of real estate for developer Janko Group. Since August 2008, he oversaw acquisitions, equity sourcing, portfolio management and leasing. Tieman previously was senior vice president of development at Opus North Corporation and vice president with then-Walsh, Higgins & Company. He has a degree in finance from the University of Illinois.

“With more than 25 years in commercial real estate development in Chicago, Randy brings the leadership and experience necessary to establish and expand Mortenson Development in Chicago,” says Bob Solfelt, vice president and general manager of Mortenson Development, an affiliate of M. A. Mortenson Company. “We aim to establish Mortenson Development as a leader in the Chicago marketplace just as we have with Mortenson Construction.”

“We've been providing development services for companies such as Allstate, JW Marriott and Hilton and have found that there are great synergies for our clients and for Mortenson by participating in the full cycle of development, construction and property management,” adds Werner.

Founded in 1954, Mortenson Construction remains a family-owned firm and has been in development since 1975. It has offices in Chicago, Denver, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Portland, San Antonio and Seattle with international operations in Canada.
