NEW YORK CITY—In his most recent post, Ethan Penner analyzes the current costs of higher education, and weighs in on the idea of universal pre-kindergarten.

Given the recent emphasis on university education, it's not surprising that tuition costs have skyrocketed, even adjusting for inflation, says Penner. More importantly, with tuition costs partially subsidized—and graduates finding themselves in a glutted market with difficulties finding employment—it stands to reason that the government is in some ways responsible for the state of this education, says Penner. Now that both President Obama and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio are attempting to provide universal pre-K, Penner asks if this government involvement will end up similarly. Penner explores the different approaches possible, and questions the overall effectiveness of government dollars in public education.
