NEWARK, NJ-Donald Katz, who founded Audible books and has been a dynamic force in Newark job creation since 2007, will be the new chairman of the city's economic development arm, Brick City Development Corp.

Katz follows a former deputy mayor, Adam Zipkin, in leading the agency. Zipkin left his post when former Mayor Cory Booker won a U.S. Senate seat last year.

As a BCDC board member, Katz has helped hone a focus on building a base to attract technology companies and start-ups who can employ Newark's cultural amenities and several universities to attract and retain a growing workforce.

"Opportunities to attract young companies that will grow jobs in Newark abound, as do next-generation training programs and job growth that can help Newark's manufacturing economy," Katz said in a statement issued Monday with the announcement of his promotion.

"A focused BCDC can play an essential role in connecting Newark to the job growth economy and, with that, increase our tax base to support services and investment in a better future," he said.

Katz moved his then-12-year-old online audio book company to Newark from Wayne in 2007.

He has been an active proselytizer on behalf of Newark as an entrepreneurial business site and employment center. Now a subsidiary of Amazon, Audible employs about 600 people in the Brick City.
