HOUSTON—Employers in Texas expect to hire at a confident pace during the second quarter of 2014, according to a recent Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. From April to June, 21% of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while 4% expect to reduce their payrolls.

Another 72% expect to maintain their current staff levels and 3% are not certain of their hiring plans. This yields a Net Employment Outlook of 17%, the survey says.

“The Q2 survey results show similar hiring plans compared to Q1when the Net Employment Outlook was 16%,” says a Manpower spokesperson. “Compared to one year ago when the Net Employment Outlook was 15%, employers are slightly more confident about their staffing plans.”

For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in Construction, Durable Goods Manufacturing, Nondurable Goods Manufacturing, Transportation & Utilities, Wholesale & Retail Trade, Information, Financial Activities, Professional & Business Services, Education & Health Services, Leisure & Hospitality, Other Services and Government.

On a national level, of the more than 18,000 employers surveyed in the US, 19% expect to add to their workforces, and 4% expect a decline in their payrolls during Quarter 2 2014. Seventy-three percent of employers anticipate making no change to staff levels, and the remaining 4% of employers are undecided about their hiring plans.

When seasonal variations are removed from the data, the Net Employment Outlook is +13%, stable compared to the Q1 2014 Net Employment Outlook of +13%, says the survey.
