PHOENIX—A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday for Sheraton Hotel Mesa along the Paseo Rio Vista connecting Cubs Park with Riverview Park. The full service hotel will be the first commercial development on the site.
“It is amazing that just four days ago we wrapped up Spring Training in Mesa and today we are breaking ground on a new hotel. This is just the beginning of what we envision for Wrigleyville West, which will provide a great experience for Cubs fans and visitors throughout the year,” Mesa mayor Scott Smith said.
The four-story, 180-room hotel will include two restaurants, bar, pool, spa and a 26,000 square foot conference center on the north side of the paseo. The project developer has also agreed to construct a minimum of 20,000 square feet of adjacent retail space and will be recruiting restaurants and other retailers.
Sheraton is owned by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. The hotel will be owned and developed by BCY LLC, a Mesa-based hospitality group with several hotel developments in Arizona and Nevada.
“We are very excited to bring this hotel to the Riverview area. Not only is it the first commercial development at Wrigleyville West, it is our company's first hotel in Mesa,” BCY president Bob Yost said.
If BCY meets its construction deadlines and other requirements along the north side of the paseo, it will have the opportunity to build a second 150 room hotel and 20,000 square feet of retail on the south side of the paseo.
The Weitz Company, based in the valley, is the contractor for the project. Sheraton Hotel Mesa is expected to open in January 2015.
