CINCINNATI—Kohrs Lonnemann Heil Engineers, one of the largest mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering firms in the Midwest, has just launched a new business unit to help architects, developers, and building owners increase energy efficiency and reduce operating expenses.

Called KLH Energy Solutions, it has six offices in the Cincinnati metro area, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, and California. It will provide a variety of services nationwide, including:

  • Building commissioning and retro-commissioning
  • Energy modeling
  • Energy audits
  • Energy Star certification
  • LEED certification consulting
  • Rebate and incentive consulting
  • Performance measurement and verification
  • Project management

KLH officials cite a recent study by Pike Research, which found that the energy management market will grow into a $5.6 billion industry by 2020.

“The growing trend of energy efficiency legislation across the country coupled with an increase in corporate pressure to reduce operating expenses has boosted demand for commercial energy solution services, and as a result, many organizations have turned to KLH to help improve energy efficiency,” says Mark Duffer, president of KLH Energy Solutions. “The ability to provide these services outside of the traditional MEP engineering environment has broadened our scope and geographical reach, while opening doors to an entirely new client base.”

KLH has hired a new team to join the business unit. Duffer, a 20-year veteran of energy management consulting services, will oversee the strategic direction. In addition to Duffer, the company also brought in Jerry Schmits to lead the business development effort and manage its revenue growth. Schmits has 15 years of experience providing energy management services to national account customers. He also has been involved with start-up ventures, having previously worked in similar capacities for Cadence Network and CBRE's global energy and sustainability group.

The two will join KLH executive Mohamed El-Sayed as managing partners of the new venture. El-Sayed has managed the building solutions operations for KLH Engineers since 2009, and will serve as director of operations.
