INDIANAPOLIS—Secure cloud computing services are a requirement for many businesses, and officials from an Ann-Arbor, MI-based provider say the city of Indianapolis is underserved in that respect, and they plan to bring in the needed computing infrastructure by September. Online Tech purchased an existing data center at 505 W. Merrill St. near the Colts stadium in downtown Indianapolis from Midcontinent Independent System Operator, Inc., an energy company, and plans to upgrade the electrical systems along with other technical enhancements.

The facility will deliver the company's secure, compliant cloud and colocation services for healthcare, financial services, retail and other companies in regulated industries. Online Tech will make a $10 million investment in the property, which includes the purchase price and planned upgrades.

“The city's large population of healthcare companies must ensure that all patient data remains safe and HIPAA compliant, which fits well with our healthcare IT focus and expertise,” said Mike Klein, co-chief executive officer of Online Tech, in a prepared statement. He was not available by press time, but GlobeSt.com will provide an update, most likely early next week. “Indianapolis also has a growing community of financial, retail, e-commerce and software businesses. They will all benefit from having an enterprise-class, secure, compliant cloud right in Indiana.”

“We looked at the entire Great Lakes region, and chose Indianapolis as it has a need for the full suite of security products and services that we offer,” said Yan Ness, the other co-chief executive officer, also in a prepared statement. “CIOs and CEOs know the challenges of making cloud computing not only secure, but also fully encrypted and compliant with regulations and standards ranging from HIPAA and SOX to PCI and Safe Harbor.”

The 44,000-square-foot data center will support three MW of electrical load and 16,000-square-feet of raised floor space. It will have a fully redundant power infrastructure to ensure uptime, and have a high concentration of fiber optics to provide customers with multiple options for network providers.

Online Tech currently has more than 100,000-square-feet in four Michigan data centers. “We see demand for our services across the Great Lakes region and nationally, and our long-range growth plan includes expansion into other Great Lakes markets,” said Ness.
