NEW YORK CITY—Here's some good news to kick off the week: the city's technology infrastructure is about to get a whole lot better.

At least, that's the promise that Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to make today, with continued offerings throughout the week as he unveils a series of technology initiatives that the city has planned, according to Crain's New York Business. The announcements will be made in conjunction with Internet Week, a seven-day celebration around town of technology's impact on business and culture.

Today's speech by the Mayor will address the technology industry's need for better broadband connectivity as well as efforts to get "broadband access as close to universal" as possible for residential customers, Crain's reports.

On Tuesday, the administration is slated to announce the makeup of its Jobs for New Yorkers Task Force, which will include representation from the tech community. On Wednesday, there will be an announcement on funding for STEM education at CUNY when the mayor visits the Bronx Academy for Software Education. Finally, on a Thursday Internet Week panel, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen will talk about workforce development.

Also during the event, the mayor's counsel, Maya Wiley, who works on broadband issues, will take part in a panel discussion on Wednesday where she will reveal specifics of the administration's Internet access plans.

One announcement, however, that the administration is not expected to make is the appointment of a chief technology officer. That position would have been a logical successor to the chief digital officer post held by Rachel Haot under Mayor Michael Bloomberg, but many of her responsibilities have been taken over by senior members of the mayor's team.

A person familiar with the situation said the search for a candidate to fill the new post was ongoing.
