SAN FRANCISCO—Developer Lennar may begin work on its planned Treasure Island residential development earlier than expected, according to local media reports.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the devlopers may be able to start work on the redevelopment plan after the eastern part of the island and Yerba Buena Island are transferred to the city later this year.

Lennar hopes to build 8,000 homes in the project, a quarter of them at affordable-housing rates.
