PHILADELPHIA—Data-center developer vXchnge is planning a 70,000-square-foot facility here, at 1500 Spring Garden St., and expects it to be completed by mid next year. The Tampa, FL-based company plans to make it one of 15 of a network of data centers across the country that it operates.

The company is looking to attract local and global companies that are looking for a high-density infrastructure to support cloud and network-based applications. A vXchnge spokesperson cites the choice of Philadelphia as a good spot for its next facility due to "the city's rise in prominence in the technology and business worlds."

The data center here will have the capacity to service the local market and could potentially provide services to "thousands of businesses" around the Metro area, the spokesperson says. vXchnge bills itself as ready to help the "dense concetration of healthcare, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and financial services firms" found here.

vXchnge has data centers in four markets on the east and west coasts. It operates locations in both Brooklyn and New York City, Chappaqua, NY; Jersey City and Secaucus, NJ; Cleveland; and Santa Clara, CA.

The news from vXchnge comes as municipalities look to increase the number of data centers in their areas. For example, Maryland's Montgomery County seeks data centers and is trying to disperse business from nearby Virginia's Loundon County.
