NEW YORK CITY—Showing considerable wear-and-tear, the Port Authority Bus Terminal is getting a makeover.

"The functionally obsolete facility no longer meets the transportation needs of the hundreds of thousands of riders that pass through the terminal every day," says executive director Pat Foye and deputy executive director Deborah Gramiccioni in a joint statement. "The Port Authority is committed to identifying comprehensive improvements to within the context of its existing Capital Plan."

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey commissioners have recommended spending $90 million to improve on-time bus operations, fix leaky ceilings and create a response team for heating and air conditioning issues at the 64-year-old depot. However, more significant repairs are in store for the terminal.

"This is a terminal and facility that's really in bad shape," notes vice chairman Scott Rechler. "Longer term, we really need a new bus terminal."

Port Authority officials showed support for replacing the bus terminal entirely, but that effort likely would cost over $1 billion and could take a decade or even 15 years to complete.

The transportation agency plans to reallocate the $90 million from the existing capital plan to improve the daily commute. It plans to rearrange gates and monitor escalators to alleviate crowding, install a bus-tracking system, renovate the second-floor restrooms and step up cleaning and repairs.

The Port Authority has also applied for a $230 million federal grant to help finance a new bus parking area over the north tube of the Lincoln Tunnel.
