In 1997 I received a DVD from USAir that enabled me to make flight reservations and book online. It was rudimentary, at best.

Fast forward to today, void of an artifact of the past, the travel agent.

Fast forward one more time. Yesterday, Zillow and Trulia, the two portals that dominate the online residential listing space, announced their possible merger.

Residential brokers are shuttering. While neither site charges to list properties for sale, they level the playing field, and have set the stage to compromise multiple listings services, and provide access to all of their data, a key step in compromising the role of the broker.

For sure the residential broker is not going away, but commission rates and the leverage they possess will be compromised. One more example of how the Internet is reshaping the real estate industry and professions that serve it.
