CHICAGO—Capri Capital Partners, LLC has just named real estate economist Dr. Sam Chandan as a partner, and its chief strategy officer and global head of strategy and research. A contributor to GlobeSt.com, Chandan also leads New York-based Chandan Economics and is an adjunct professor of real estate at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He will continue those activities and join the Chicago-based firm's investment committee and lead its domestic and global investment strategy and research activities.

“Sam is one of our industry's true thought leaders. He brings to Capri significant expertise in real estate analysis and applied strategy,” says Capri chairman and chief executive officer Quintin E. Primo III. “This appointment happens at a critical juncture in the growth of our platform, both in the US and as we expand further into Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.”

The firm is seeking to expand its activity in India, for example, “a very different environment for real estate investment,” Chandan tells GlobeSt.com. “Having strong local partners is critical to success when investing in India.” And although Capri officials already have strong relationships in the country, he adds that he also has personal ties to the country and “an affinity for the market” and can help from a research and strategy perspective.

In 2013, Capri signed a strategic partnership with Money Matters Financial Services Limited, a firm traded on the Indian National Stock Exchange. MMFSL was renamed Capri Global Capital Limited and Primo joined it as non-executive chairman. The partners have decided to explore investment opportunities in South Asian residential and commercial real estate.

Chandan was previously chief economist at real estate data and analytics companies Reis and Real Capital Analytics. He currently serves as the national economist laureate of the Real Estate Lenders Association and is on the editorial and advisory boards of several industry associations, including the Commercial Real Estate Finance Council.

Founded in 1992, Capri has acquired or originated over $10 billion in commercial real estate investments. As of March 31, 2014, it managed on behalf of its investors about $4.04 billion in assets.
