LOS ANGELES—TCA Architects and Equity Residential have unveiled design plans for Altitude at Howard Hughes Center, a luxury 545-unit multifamily complex scheduled to open in 2016. The project is the first residential community at the Howard Hughes Center.
TCA designed the building in a contemporary art-deco style, highlighted by glass towers that anchor each of the property's multiple buildings. “The architectural styling makes reference to the aeronautical history of Howard Hughes' brilliant life and career,” Winston Chang, principal of TCA Architects, tells GlobeSt.com. “Corner beacons of illuminated glass recall runway control towers, while canted roofs and projecting canopies are designed to impart a feeling of the thrust of airplane wings. The interiors are designed to maximize daylight, with aeronautical motifs and colorations based upon Howard Hughes historic aircrafts.”
The 545 units are a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments, which will be designed with clean lines and modern materials. The building will feature a fitness center, pools and community gathering areas, like social lounges and outdoor patios. Last year, the owners of the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center announced plans to reposition the property as an entertainment center to appeal to the growing Silicon Beach demographic. The center now features a Cinemark Extreme Digital Cinema, Dave & Busters and ample dining options.
According to Chang, the owners will target young professionals for the new multifamily property, like “millennials and late boomers who are technologically savvy." He adds that the property is perfect for “active individuals who will appreciate the generous landscaped courtyards, fully equipped exercise facilities and pedestrian access to the nearby and forthcoming entertainment venue at the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center.”
