HYATTSVILLE, MD—Echo Realty and The Bernstein Cos. have broken ground on The Gateway at University Town Center, a 3.5-acre grocery-anchored mixed-use project here that will be anchored by a 54,400-square foot Safeway supermarket. There will also be an additional 29,000 square feet of retail and medical office use.

The project is located at the intersection of East-West Highway and America Boulevard. It will serve as a "front door" to University Town Center, a sprawling development in which Bernstein Cos, is active and that is home to more than 1.5 million square feet of office, two residential condominium towers, one 900-bed student housing tower and approximately 125,000 square feet of retail space anchored by a 67,500 square foot Regal Cinema.

Other tenants in the two-story The Gateway at University Town Center include 10,000 square feet of a soon-to-be-announced medical center. Also, a 9,000 square foot two-story building will house Unleashed by Petco at street level and Phenix Salon on the second level.
