NEW YORK CITYReal estate owner/developer Charles S. Cohen—who also heads a growing film distribution and production companyhas gained control of one of the city's most iconic movie houses—the historic Quad Cinema at 34 W. 13th St. in Greenwich Village. GlobeSt.com was unable to learn the purchase price at press time.

Cohen, president and CEO of Cohen Brothers Realty Corp. and chairman/CEO of Cohen Media Group, gained control of the Quad Cinema, which is structured as a cooperative, through the purchase of shares and by acquiring the building's proprietary lease.

Charles S. Cohen heads a real estate development company that owns and manages over eleven million square feet of Class A commercial space in Manhattan, West Side Los Angeles, South Florida and Houston. Among his signature New York properties are 623 Fifth Ave., 135 E. 57th St., 805 Third Ave., 750 Lexington Ave., 622 Third Ave., 979 Third Ave., 3 E. 54th St., 475 Park Ave. South, the D&D Building at 979 Third Ave. and 333 Westchester Ave. in White Plains.

Opened in October 1972 by entrepreneur Maurice Kanbar as the city's first four-screen movie theatre (a forerunner to the multiplex), the Quad has enjoyed a long run as an art house cinema showing critically acclaimed foreign and independent films.

“The torch has been passed so that the Quad can remain a beacon of opportunity here in New York for the independent film community,” says Cohen, who also plans to showcase titles from the Cohen Collection, a catalog of historic films owned by Cohen Media Group.

“New York City has perhaps the greatest concentration of serious cinema lovers in the country, but for too long, these great, knowledgeable fans have had few places to see classic and important films on the big screen,” notes Cohen. “The always-vital Quad Cinema will now become an even more important destination for classic films and compelling new ones—and the moviegoers who love them.”
