WASHINGTON, DC—The District has issued Request for Proposals for the redevelopment of the Eastern Branch Boys and Girls Club in Hill East.

Terming the project “an extraordinary opportunity for a community cornerstone” the District suggests in the RFP that the building be retained and rehabilitated rather than replaced, according to the Washington Business Journal.

The Boys and Girls Club at 261 17th St. SE was built in 1937. The 31,028-square-foot facility was acquired by the District in 2010 for $20 million. The club was closed in August 2007 “due to rising costs and a considerable decrease in enrollment.”

According to the District, the property “now shows signs of deterioration leaving both the exterior and interior in need of repair.” The RFP states, “greater weight will be given to those proposals that incorporate housing, particularly family or senior housing.” See story in the Washington Business Journal.
