BROWNSVILLE, Tex.—SpaceX has broken ground on a site east of here that will serve as commercial satellite launch venue.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk said yesterday that his company expects to spend $100 million in South Texas over the next three to four years on the first commercial orbital spaceport, according to an AP report. Gov. Rick Perry and other officials joined Musk at the ground-breaking ceremony.
Construction of the $85 million site at Boca Chica Beach will be offset by $2.3 million from the Texas Enterprise Fund and $13 million from the Spaceport Trust Fund.
Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX is expected to create 300 jobs at the site. The company already has a rocket-testing facility southwest of Waco that employs 250 people.
