PHILADELPHIA—A host of dignitaries including Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter are expected to be on hand today for the official groundbreaking of the East Market Street project here.

Today's ceremony will mark the start of demolition and construction at the 4.3-acre site bordered by Market, Chestnut, 11th and 12th streets. The first phase of the East Market Street project will total 650,000 square feet and cost $230 million to build. Plans call for the construction of a 17-story, 322-apartment tower that will have the first two levels dedicated to 160,000 square feet of retail space.

The initial phase will also include renovating the family court building with retail space on the street level and office space above. See story in the Philadelphia Business Journal.
