MIAMI—The City of Miami finally got its own Walmart. The retailing giant opened a 24/7 Walmart Neighborhood Market on Wednesday at 6991 Southwest 8th Street in an area known as Flagami.

The new retail store is part of Walmart's plan to open 270 to 300 small-format locations in 2014. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998 and there are about 300 nationally. The new store employs up to 95 full- and part-time associates.

“In addition to bringing jobs to the community, the store is activating a site that has been vacant for years and will hopefully serve as a catalyst for further economic development in the surrounding neighborhood,” says Miami-Dade County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa, who represents the area. The new store is about one-quarter the size of a Walmart Supercenter.
