CHICAGO—The US Green Building Council has just awarded its LEED-EB Gold certification to 181 W. Madison, the headquarters building of MB Real Estate. The company also leases and manages the property, which is owned by CBRE Global Investors.

The USGBC gives the LEED-EB Gold rating to existing buildings for maximizing operational efficiency and minimizing environmental impacts. “Green buildings go beyond energy savings,” says Krystal Kurinsky, senior vice president and general manager at 181 W. Madison. “They also create a more sustainable environment for our tenants and our surrounding community.”

The sustainability initiatives launched at 181 W. Madison include:
• Efficient equipment, including chillers, a building automation system, air handling units and electrical infrastructure improvements.
• Low-flow toilets and sink aerators facilitating water conservation and lower energy costs.
• Green cleaning practices implemented throughout the building.

Constructed in 1990, 181 W. Madison is a 50-story, class A property in downtown Chicago with a total of 952,559-square-feet. In addition to its new certification, the building holds an ENERGY STAR® rating for its practices in energy efficiency. The owner has also decided to spend $8.5 million on capital improvements, including a Worldwide Wellness Center, lobby upgrades, spec suites and more eco-friendly features.

“I would like to thank our ownership, tenants, management staff and LEED consultants for their role in this collaborative effort,” adds Kurinsky. “This is an achievement of which we can all be proud for many years to come.”
