IRVINE, CA—More than 80 California grocery stores, including 11 in Orange County and five in the Inland Empire, have been acquired by Haggen Food & Pharmacy, Bellingham, WA.

A report in the Orange County Register says the company plans to purchase 146 Albertsons and Safeway stores in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada and Arizona. Terms have not been disclosed.
Albertsons and Safeway plan to merge in a deal announced in March, and in order to comply with the Federal Trade Commission, the two companies must sell some stores bofre merging.
Haggen owns 18 stores with 16 pharmacies in Washington and Oregon. If Haagen's acquisition plan is approved by the FTC, it will grow to 164 stores with 106 pharmacies.
The Register noted that 11 of about 65 Vons, Albertsons and Pavilions across Orange County would be sold before mid-2015. The stores' staff and local management would not change, Haggen officials said.
