Life is lonely at the top. While the average tenure of a Fortune 500 CEO is only 4.6 years, it's even more precarious for the top dogs in professional sports.
Yesterday was Black Monday, the day after the NFL season draws to a close when day owners axe head coaches and general managers for a poor season. The stats don't lie, and coaches begin feeling the heat well before the clock ran out this weekend. Four head coaches and two general managers were given walking papers by the Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and the San Francisco 49ers.
What's going on now is a fast paced, 24/7 schedule over the next 7 to 10 days when the teams hustle to hire the best talent to fill the coaches chairs from a very limited pool. It's a scenario any organization should be familiar with.
I thought that I would focus on sports as most of us are on vacation and recharging our batteries for 2015. Enjoy the playoffs, reflect on what a relatively great year this has been, and wish for an even better New Year.
Best wishes to all of you who follow the Executive Watch.
