LOS ANGELES—The L.A. Athletic Club in Downtown Los Angeles has launched a massive, multi-million dollar renovation, the largest in the club's history. The renovation will add NBA-style stall lockers, expanded spa facilities, high-end athletic retail, and a speakeasy to the facility.

SRK Architects is leading the design of the renovation project, while Phoenix Construction and Management serves as the general contractor. The project will be done in three six-month increments and will be complete in January 2016. This construction schedule will give members continuous use of the property throughout the renovation process. The team did not respond to a request for comment before the publication of this story.

In addition to the design, the renovation will also update the building's mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems, as well as incorporating green features into the building. According to general manager Steve Hathaway, the management team toured several of the top private clubs in Southern California during the planning process for inspiration. The final design will include men's and women's locker facilities with showers, hydrotherapy, steam and sauna, a retail reception lobby on the fifth floor, as well as a sixth floor spa lobby with a barber shop, nail salon and swimming pool.

The property was originally constructed in 1912. The new design can be viewed in a discovery center at the club.

The renovation of this historic club falls in trend with the ongoing downtown renaissance, which has included the renovation of several historic buildings. Last year, those renovations included the PacMutual Campus earning a LEED Gold certification. Built in 1935, it is the oldest building in Los Angeles to hold the title.
