This was the week that was in Paris: after the terrible events earlier this week in France, the world went on high alert, reminding us all that personal security can evaporate in a fleeting moment. Those were careers, lives, families torn apart, and it's time for a reality check.
I am posting this column today from Phoenix, and while in town I had occasion to visit a first-class office building that had absolutely zero security. This was in stark contrast to New York City, where security, especially in major office buildings, borders on an armed fortress. I'm not a big fan of overdoing security, but I'm always puzzled by the skimpy security in commercial office buildings outside of New York.
Phoenix is not New York and it's not Paris. But one would think that at least some minimum level of security is in order in any first-class office building, no matter where.
