Part 1 of 2

SAN FRANCISCO—HGA Architects and Engineers has acquired ReelGrobman, an award-winning, San Jose, CA-based design firm. The acquisition strengthens HGA's current San Francisco Bay area practice, which now includes offices in San Francisco and San Jose, and expands HGA's California presence. HGA now has eight offices nationwide, four of which are in California, and approximately 650 employees. GlobeSt.com exclusively chats with firm CEO Daniel Avchen on what it was that attracted HGA to expand here, what this acquisition means for the firm, and much more in this two-part series.

GlobeSt.com: What is it about California, and specifically the Bay Area, that attracts HGA to expand?

Daniel Avchen: We were specifically interested in the Bay Area because of the vibrant economy, and this acquisition strengthens our corporate environments practice and expands HGA's regional services into the corporate services and technology markets, bringing more diversity and capabilities to our portfolio.

GlobeSt.com: How will HGA's services expand as a result of this acquisition?

Avchen: As an award-winning, national firm, HGA is known for our integration of services, lean design and innovative project design delivery. By acquiring a boutique firm such as this -- that shares our cultural style and values -- we are able to continue to deliver award-quality design while adding to local design expertise. This acquisition will expand and strengthen HGA's ability to provide turn-key, full-service design solutions ranging from innovative exterior architecture to interiors technology mapping. It brings an additional perspective to our corporate environments practice and gives us an expanded presence in the technology interiors practice.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this Q&A, where we discuss why HGA has embraced the expansion by acquisition strategy, what has made it successful and what the future holds for the Bay Area.
