GlobeSt.com:
How do you stay focused with such a hectic work schedule?

Mulhern: I find that managing my energy is as important as managing my time. My biggest energy boosters are quiet time in the morning, eating well, staying active, being grateful for everything big and small, and keeping my weekends open for free time. I also spend my time doing things that I am uniquely qualified to do. Besides being really good at these things, they are what I love to do. I surround myself with people, structures and systems that support my unique abilities, and that is another big boost to both my energy and motivation.

GlobeSt.com: You have a wife and nine children. How do you balance your work life with your home life?

Mulhern: Let me begin with the answers to a few questions I always receive when people find out that my wife and I have nine kids: one wife of 26 years, no twins, kids' ages are 2 to 25 years and, yes, we are Catholic. My wife and children are my greatest joys and they drive the priorities in my life: faith, family (with my wife being the highest family priority), health, work, and community involvement. When I keep my priorities in this order, I am a very happy man. Any new commitment or obligation has to pass through this filter or I will not take it on. To anyone wondering if you can have lots of kids and still keep your sanity and have a happy life and a productive career, I offer a resounding “yes.”

GlobeSt.com: How do you spend your leisure time?

Mulhern: I call it free time and it is one of my main sources of personal renewal and regeneration. I believe that family time, quiet time in the morning, attending family events and just walking hand-in-hand with my wife are the greatest gifts the world can give. I also like to hike, backpack with the kids, and to help organize big family events. My life is full of such blessings.

GlobeSt.com: Are the lines blurred between your work and personal life?

Mulhern: No. My priorities assure that my personal life gets top billing. I believe a clear line between work and personal life is necessary if I want a happy wife and happy kids. They deserve my focus more than my work does, and that is why work is number four on the priorities listed above. Some practical consequences of this are that I don't work on weekends, including checking emails. I figure that if there is a real emergency someone will track me down. This allows me a certain peace and satisfaction that many busy professionals lack.

GlobeSt.com: What advice would you give to young people coming up in the business?

Mulhern: My wife and I have two recent college graduates as well as two kids currently in college. We encourage them to pursue what they love, to not be afraid to live their values and pursue their personal priorities, and to be a source of love and light to the world. People like interested people more than interesting people, so we encourage them show interest and be attentive to others. We also encourage lifelong learning and sticking to the basics: show up on time, say please and thank you, do what you say you are going to do, and finish what you start. This is simple advice, but it goes a long way.
