RESTON, VA—JBG Cos. proposal to add retail and restaurant space at its 490,000-square-foot suburban office campus here at Reston Executive Center has drawn praise from Fairfax County planners.

The project at the 13.77-acre property across from the Reston Town Center, calls for the conversion of the first two floors of the three existing buildings for retail and restaurant use, as well as additional space for each building for the same purpose, and the development of a new standalone retail building in the southwestern corner of the site. The campus will be renamed "RTC West," according to the Washington Business Journal.

The project calls for 40,100 square feet of retail and restaurant space, 25,000 square feet of new space, and 15,100 square feet of converted space. Most of the project—30,075 square feet—is devoted to restaurant space with the remainder (10,205 square feet) is slated for specialty retail use.

"The applicant's proposal has the potential to be the first step in what could be a dramatic transformation of the Reston Executive Center property from a 1980s office complex to a mixed use transit-oriented development as envisioned in the new Comprehensive Plan text for the Reston Town Center area," according to a Fairfax County planning staff report "The high quality architecture and urban design proposed by the applicant will enhance the vibrancy and activity of this site and help to set the tone for the future redevelopment of this property and adjacent properties."

The plan is expected to be the subject of a Feb. 4 Planning Commission public hearing. See story in the Washington Business Journal.
