SAN DIEGO—“Keeping the Chargers in San Diego is damn important I think.” So said Mayor Kevin Faulconer yesterday at the NAIOP luncheon at the Marriot San Diego Del Mar.

It was no surprise the Mayor started off his speech by mentioning the elephant in the room just one week before he celebrates one year on the job. As of press time, while the Mayor didn't detail any plans of attack, he noted that his advisory committee will speed up its work and present a stadium plan to the team within three months that could keep it from moving to the Los Angeles area.

“Keeping the team here is important to our city, our region and our county,” he told the audience of more than 200. “It is part of the fabric of our city that we have professional sports team.”

Not repeating financial mistakes of the past was another key point the Mayor continued to make. “We have come too far,” he said.

“You have a Mayor that supports you and understands that when you are successful, our city is successful,” he told the NAIOP audience. When you generate sales tax and property tax, that is a large source of revenue to the city, he said. “That is how we give back and keep libraries open…that is when things are going well.”

In looking ahead at the changes the City plans in the year ahead, a lot of the focus, Mayor Faulconer said, is about economic development. “There are some great opportunities because you have the leadership to make that happen and a community that understands we have an opportunity to create good jobs.”

He explained that encouraging and providing incentives to get you [NAIOP members] through the process in a defined amount of time is critical. “That is how we create good quality jobs…by working positively, working collaboratively, and if you treat people with dignity and respect, you can usually find solutions no matter the background.”
