NEW YORK CITY—Developers and land use attorneys alike have a new guide to zoning issues. ALM's Law Journal Press, sister organization to GlobeSt.com, on Thursday released Land Use Law: Zoning in the 21st Century, a practical guide to modern zoning issues for land use attorneys, planners and developers.

Zoning ultimately is defined by local circumstances, as the US Supreme Court has acknowledged. Those circumstances may change from town to town and year to year, and therefore land uses that were prohibited in the past may be celebrated in the future, and vice versa. The new book was created to provide land use professionals with guidance on zoning issues and up-to-date analyses of the legal issues they are likely to encounter.

The book contains appendices with checklists, tips and guidelines, as well as sample ordinances, agreements, forms and other documents that practitioners will find valuable. Collaborating on Land Use Law was a team of attorneys from Chicago-based local government law firm Ancel, Glink, Diamond, Bush, DiCianni & Krafthefer P.C., including Brent O. Denzin, Julie A. Tappendorf, Adam B. Simon, David S. Silverman, Gregory W. Jones and Daniel J. Bolin.

Specific topics covered include:

  • Harmonizing zoning goals
  • Promoting economic development
  • Managing stormwater
  • Promoting pedestrian- and transit-oriented development
  • Regulating adult use establishments
  • Controlling climate change
  • Setting standards for gun sales and use
  • Planning for urban agriculture
  • Addressing foreclosures and blight
  • Zoning for cellular communications
  • Regulating hydraulic fracturing
  • Planning for wind-generated energy
  • Regulating digital signage
