NEW YORK CITY—As word of the sudden and untimely death of Patricia Goldstein, vice chairman at Emigrant Bank has worked its way through the industry, several colleagues have shared tributes. Among the recurring themes in remembering Goldstein—who served at Citibank for over two decades and worked at several marquee-name firms—were her frankness, an ability to spot great real estate and a willingness to help others get ahead.

“Pat Goldstein was a firebrand who took not one ounce of crap from her business or corporate associates,” says Quintin Primo III, co-founder, chairman and CEO, Capri Capital Partners.

“She was my boss' boss when I first joined Citibank as a full-time assocate in 1979,” he continues. “I did an analysis on the housing market and was just amazed at her ability to take the conclusions that had taken me a month to arrive at three and four brilliant steps further.”

Today, he adds, “I still hold within me the insights Pat offered as well as the way she taught me to think critically and objectively. When I take a researched conclusion make by one of my young associates three or four steps further, I invariably think of Pat, with her keen intellect and fierce spirit.

Asserts Mary Ann Tighe, CEO, New York tri-state region, CBRE, “She was an extraordinarily generous mentor. I am in a completely different segment of the industry but when I met her decades ago I realized what a resource she was because she knew—and had transacted with—so many people that you could call her and say, 'tell me about so and so.'

“She would give you the down low openly and open heartedly,” continues Tighe, “without expecting anything—she was just being a good colleague. She did this for many women in the industry and since word came of her passing, I've heard how many men she did it for too.”

Says Wendy Silverstein, former EVP and co-head of acquisitions and capital markets at Vornado Realty Trust, “Pat was a force of nature and she lived to enjoy it all: her amazing career in real estate with a work ethic that never slowed down, her unbelievable devotion to her children and grandchildren and the ability to have not one but two successful and loving marriages. She taught a whole generation of women in real estate how you really could do it all as long as you had the brains, energy and passion to make it work. She was a mentor to many simply by being such a great example but to those of us lucky enough to call her a friend she was also someone who cared and was always there to offer her guidance and support. We all will miss her dearly. “

Notes Daniel Neidich, CEO, partner and member of the investment committee at Dune Real Estate Partners, “What was so amazing about Pat was that while she was so much about the analytics and the numbers, she had a fundamental understanding of real estate. When in 2012 we at Dune and Whitehall were trying to convince bank groups that 56 Leonard St. was worth supporting as the first major condo development to be started after the financial crisis, Pat was our quickest and most passionate supporter. She said—long before any other banker—that 56 Leonard would be an outstanding success. She immediately understood the buyer demand that a unique product in Tribeca could create.”

“We all will miss Pat's ability to get to the crux of any problem,” he continues, “although sometimes getting to that crux might involve a lengthy conversation with herself as she simultaneously argued multiple sides of the argument/analysis often answering her own questions. In a world where few people are comfortable saying exactly what they think, Pat was truly unique.”

Jonathan Mechanic, partner at Fried Frank, says simply, “Pat was a giant of the real estate industry. She knew everyone and was respected by all. She was smart and a tough negotiator but she knew when it was time to close.”
