Last week the Wall Street Journal featured a story about Scott Resnick, who once upon a time was in line to take the helm of the family business, Jack Resnick and Sons, one of New York City's finest “family” real estate companies. Instead, Scott decided to strike out on his own to successfully develop his own brand of New York Skyscrapers.
New York, and every large and medium-sized city across the United States, enjoys a rich history of multi-generational real estate families dominating the development landscape. Of course the key for these family enterprises is for the next generation, and the next generation after that, to produce another real estate prodigy who is equipped to carry on the business.
Fortunately for Resnick, Scott's brother Jonathan was in the wings and prepared to fill the leadership role for the next generation. Not every family-biz is quite that lucky.
