EL CAJON, CA—With an anticipated groundbreaking for a national chain hotel here, city officials are now ready to begin talks with a competing company regarding the possible development of a second new hotel.

The El Cajon City Council met Tuesday with plans to discuss signing an exclusive contract with Hampton Inn, part of Hilton, to build at 100 Fletcher Parkway, the site of the former police station, according to a report in the San Diego Union Tribune.

Courtyard by Marriott already has plans for a 120-room hotel to open next year at North Magnolia and Rea avenues at Civic Center Way.

Both hotel sites are close to downtown El Cajon.

The newspaper says a city subcommittee has had offers from seven possible developers for a multitude of uses for the police station site. The Hampton deal is being recommended, as it is thought to be the highest and best use of the site, according to city planners. There are currently18 motels and no hotels in El Cajon, according to a city council source in the article
