NEW YORK CITY—In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and the toll of its wrath on the South Street Seaport, there were questions surrounding the future of the waterside tourist attraction. But developer Howard Hughes Corp., stepped forward with an ambitious plan to transform the site. GlobeSt.com sat down with Lincoln Palsgrove, director of marketing at HHC, to learn more about the site's current state and the company's future plans for the project.
GlobeSt.com: You've already created some unique offerings at the Seaport for those parts that have reopened since Hurricane Sandy. Can you explain what some of those programs are?
Palsgrove: The South Street Seaport is transforming into a one-of-a-kind fashion destination. With its laser focused intent to create a new, unique retail destination for New Yorkers while enhancing an iconic part of New York City, the Howard Hughes Corp. has partnered with Women's Wear Daily to help foster the future of the fashion industry in Lower Manhattan. Seaport Studios at 19 Fulton St. is one of many projects we have been working on that supports the vision of what's to come at the Seaport in terms of a diversity of unique design talent and the new Pier 17, opening in 2017.
GlobeSt.com: What is the Seaport Studios concept?
Palsgrove: Seaport Studios is a rotating showcase that will feature select styles and design envisioned as an eclectic mix of fashion, art, food and beverage in a curated environment. The designers that were selected will display their collections during different phases of the pop-up that will through the end of the year.
GlobeSt.com: Why do you feel the project needs elements such as Seaport Studios?
Palsgrove: Lower Manhattan is quickly becoming a top retail destination. Seaport Studios is one example of how the Howard Hughes Corp. plans to address the changes happening in Lower Manhattan by offering goods and services that are relevant to our new and diverse residential population in the Financial District and surrounding community.
GlobeSt.com: How is the Seaport transformation going and what's the timeline for the project?
Palsgrove: The next two years will be pivotal for the neighborhood. We plan to open the iPic Theaters in the Fulton Market Building in 2016 and then, in 2017, we will have the grand opening of Pier 17. We are sure that will be an iconic addition to the New York skyline.
