The most exciting—and without question one of the most successful enterprises of the Internet era—is aging, as reflected by the company’s announcement that it is reorganizing and separating its highly profitable search and advertising business from fledgling efforts in an array of so-called moonshots.

The new structure creates a holding company, Alphabet Inc., that will manage each of its exploding new businesses, including those building robots and self-driving cars, helping to cure disease, developing nanoparticles and extending Internet connectivity via balloons. Arguably, Google is one of the most creative companies on Google Earth, but the announcement of the reorganization signals that it is losing its nimbleness, and has reverted to a ballooning corporate structure that will likely slow the creative processes that made it what it is today.
