With much hoopla, the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Association cut the ribbon on the expansion of the NYC subway system. The new station opens a one mile extension of the #7 line to the west side of Manhattan and will serve the new massive Hudson Yards development. It was another technological feet and a shiny new example of what might be.

Alas, in the most recent survey by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) of America's infrastructure from bridges, water systems, aviation, dams, and mass transportation systems such as New York City's, the report card was a not shocking, but certainly an alarming D+.

An Advisory Council of ASCE members assigns the grades according to the following eight criteria: capacity, condition, funding, future need, operation and maintenance, public safety, resilience, and innovation. Since 1998, the grades have been falling, averaging only Ds due to delayed maintenance and underinvestment across most categories. A few years ago a bridge collapsed in Minneapolis, a wake-up call that signals the extreme situation that exists in every city in the US.

In NYC, all one needs to do is a visual inspection of the steel beams that support the roads above. You'll see gaping holes and rust that one must assume will eventually fail. The massive move back to urban centers is going to be stifled, if not brought to a grinding halt if local, state and city political pundits do not acknowledge that the infrastructure of our great nation is crumbling.

By the way, enjoy your ride on the #7 subway. It will be safe for at least the next 50 years or so.
