Yesterday Linkedin, the social networking site which already features free lunches, ping-pong tables and open workspaces for its employees, rolled-out its newest HR benefit, a “discretionary time-off” policy. That means that you can take as much time off as you want.

It's not a new idea, as numerous tech companies have instituted such programs. It isn't a bad idea, either, but it flies in the face of the reality that Americans are reluctant to take vacation at all.

On average, American employees only take about half of the vacation they are entitled to, according to a survey conducted by Glassdoor, a website where employees and former employees anonymously review companies and their management.

Vacation, the “American-Way” is anti-family, anti-health and anti-productivity. Without an opportunity to unwind and renew with a “proper vacation” performance waivers, health deteriorates and family suffers.

Bravo to Linkedin, but alas, there's a flip side for the company. Without specified vacation time, there is no accrued vacation pay when an employee quits—a big payday for Linkedin. I knew there was a catch!
