BOSTON—Officials with LEGO Education North America have confirmed previous reports that the company will relocate its headquarters from Kansas to Boylston St. in the city's Back Bay.
The company, headquartered in in Billund, Denmark, will relocate its North America headquarters from Pittsburg, KA. The company will take occupancy of a 20,000-square-foot office at 501 Boylston St. in March 2016. The company had operations at the Pittsburg location for nearly two decades and it was at that location where the company's foundation was built, company officials note.
Boston Mayor Martin Walsh reported LEGO North America's intent to move its headquarters to Boston last month before a meeting of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.
The company conducted a more than six-month nationwide search and selected Boston for its “world-renowned education industry ecosystem and unmatched education partner network” as well as for its technology and digital innovation environment. The company also picked Boston due to its proximity to its offices in Enfield, CT and transportation access to its global headquarters in Denmark.
“To be among the more than 30 education companies in the heart of Boston's education epicenter affords us excellent opportunities to continue to fulfill our long-term goal, which is to encourage students to think creatively and reason systematically to release their future potential and to help teachers make learning fun by providing them with physical and digital resources for the classroom that go beyond rote learning,” says LEGO North America president Colin Gillespie. “We are excited to call the city, which established the first public school in the U.S., our home.”
He says the company was excited by the education cluster in the Back Bay, as well as an education incubator, all within an eighth of a mile radius.
The space on the corner of the fourth floor of the Boylston St. building will be open and collaborative and designed to resemble classrooms and a schoolyard. The office design is inspired, Gillespie says, from the first public school built in the United States on School Street in Boston in 1635.
The new offices will house sales, marketing, customer service and operations functions, as well as finance and human resources, executive management and curriculum specialists. The company expects to have approximately 75 employees working out of its new space over the next four to seven years. He tells Globest.com that LEGO Education North America expects to be filling new positions in marketing, sales, operations and in specialty roles such as in curriculum development, for example.
Gillespie would not comment on whether the company has filed for or expects incentives from Massachusetts or the City of Boston in connection with its move. He said that Boston bested two other finalists, but he did not reveal the other two finalist locations.
John Barros, chief of economic development for the City of Boston, said in a prepared statement, “We are honored to have a division of one of the world's top 100 most valuable brands call Boston home. LEGO Education is a perfect fit for Boston, because quality education has always been a part of our proud history. We welcome LEGO Education and are looking forward to supporting this work, which will make invaluable contributions to every facet of our economy and the local, national and international education communities within the Back Bay area and beyond.”
The more than 35-year-old company provides solutions and resources that are used in the classroom. Its portfolio involves science, technology, engineering, computer science, math and the humanities disciplines. The company offers educational sets, activity packs, teacher resources and programming tools to educators.
