FORT WORTH—University Park Village has landed a Tesla showroom.
The Palo Alto, CA-based company has confirmed exclusively to GlobeSt.com that it will open a 2,000 to 3,000-square-foot gallery at the Simon Property Group LP-owned shopping center just east of TCU early next year.
The gallery will be the electric carmaker's second in DFW; there is one at NorthPark Center in Dallas that opened in June 2014.
"We place galleries in strategic locations based on where we think our current and future customer base live, and in areas where people are informed and interested in technology," Tesla rep Alexis Georgeson told GlobeSt.com. "Tesla stores and galleries are in high-foot traffic locations where we have the opportunity to inform as many people about EVs, our company and the advanced technology behind Model S."
Because current Texas state laws prevent the company from conducting sales, such as "taking orders, discussing prices or giving test-drives," the carmaker operates "galleries" rather than "stores."
"Despite the fact that we cannot sell in the state, we have thousands of Teslas registered in Texas," Georgeson says. "[And the] Model S can be ordered online at teslamotors.com."
Georgeson says the new UPV gallery will have an open glass storefront that will "invite customers in to interact with the cars on display."
The gallery will also feature a big screen on the back wall, private sitting areas where customers and product specialists can talk and design studios where visitors can customize their Model S. Two static display Model S also invite visitors to slide into the driver's seat.
Currently, University Park Village is nearly 100 percent occupied, since new boutique Altar'd State was added to the store lineup. Blue Mesa Grill is slated to leave UPV by July 1, according to the Star-Telegram's Bud Kennedy; Georgeson could not confirm exactly where in the center the Tesla gallery will go.
Reps for Simon Property Group did not return repeated requests for a comment.
